This year our community came together to revitalize the Bayfield Elementary School garden. Over the summer, members of the Pine River Garden Club pitched in over 1,000 work hours to rebuild raised beds and inspire teachers to use the garden as an outdoor classroom. In partnership with the Garden Club, several teachers attended a workshop in August hosted by The Garden Project and Slow Food USA. This opportunity came along at the perfect time and it was filled with relevant resources and ideas! This will help teachers connect garden lessons to their standards and curriculum.
Our school is in the process of forming a Garden Committee which will create a Vision Statement and support students in learning where our food comes from. We would like to work towards eventually creating a Youth Farmers Market! The cafeteria staff has also been tremendously supportive and is already serving spinach, basil, and kale grown in the garden which is harvested by students each Monday morning!
